Psalm 13
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

[1] How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
[2] How long must I take counsel in my soul
and have sorrow in my heart all the day?
How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?

[3] Consider and answer me, O LORD my God;
light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death,
[4] lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,”
lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken.

[5] But I have trusted in your steadfast love;
my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.
[6] I will sing to the LORD,
because he has dealt bountifully with me. (ESV)

1 Peter 2:1-12
[1] So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. [2] Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation—[3] if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.

[4] As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, [5] you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. [6] For it stands in Scripture:

“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,
a cornerstone chosen and precious,
and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

[7] So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe,

“The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone,”

[8] and

“A stone of stumbling,
and a rock of offense.”

They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.

[9] But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. [10] Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

[11] Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. [12] Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation. (ESV)

Wisdom Prepares a Table

Proverbs 9:1-6
1Wisdom has built her house;
she has hewn her seven pillars.
2 She has slaughtered her beasts; she has mixed her wine;
she has also set her table.
3 She has sent out her young women to call
from the highest places in the town,
4 “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!”
To him who lacks sense she says,
5 “Come, eat of my bread
and drink of the wine I have mixed.
6 Leave your simple ways,[a] and live,
and walk in the way of insight.”

So, there is a banquet in the house of wisdom. Wisdom has prepared a feast for us. Wisdom sets the table with bread and wine, and a slaughtered lamb. Wisdom adorns the table with the finest of silver and her most precious glass. Wisdom cries out to the simpleminded, to those who lack sense, to those who lack understanding and insight about the way and life of wisdom, beckoning them to come and dine at this fine meal and live. If we eat from this table that Wisdom prepares, we discover that the meal itself is wisdom for us. But not man’s wisdom, for man’s wisdom leads to death and is foolish in God’s sight. Instead, the meal set before us is God’s wisdom. Though foolish in man’s sight, those who eat at this banquet, at this table, proclaim that God alone is wise and the wisdom of man is foolish.

Set before us this morning is the Wisdom and power of God. The lamb has been slaughtered, the bread has been broken, the wine has been poured out. Set before us is Jesus Christ, the lamb slain, the body broken, the blood shed. In Him are all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. God has made Him to be to us wisdom from God, our righteousness and sanctification and redemption.

So we come to this table as fools, as the simpleminded, as the weak and poor of this world. Why do we come? Because God graciously draws and invites his guests. Because God gives life to the dead, gives wisdom to the foolish, gives power and riches to the weak and poor. And all of these He gives to us through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. So if you come to this table this morning, you cannot come boasting in your own wisdom, you cannot come proud of your achievements in righteousness, you cannot come believing that your own efforts to obey God are enough to please Him. Those who come to this table, renounce and reject all those things and instead boast in the wisdom and power of God displayed in and given through the person and work of Jesus Christ.

Prayer: Our Gracious God and Father, we come to the table and supper this morning renouncing our own wisdom, repenting of our own righteousness, rejecting the notion and lie that we naturally deserve a place at this meal. Instead, we rejoice in our great salvation and redemption in and through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
